The Bermuda Flag
The Bermuda flag is a distinctive and recognisable symbol of the British overseas territory of Bermuda, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. The flag features a red ensign with a Union Jack in the upper left corner, and the coat of arms of Bermuda in the centre of the right half of the flag.
The Union Jack in the upper left corner of the flag represents Bermuda’s historical ties to Great Britain. The red ensign is a flag used by British merchant and passenger ships, and it’s commonly used by British overseas territories as their official flag. The flag was first adopted in 1610 and is still in use today. It is used for anything related to Bermuda as well as on many ships and yachts registered on island.
Bermuda Flag Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms on the Bermuda Flag depicts a lion holding a shield with an image of a sinking ship. The ship portrayed is the Sea Venture which was the first British Ship to be wrecked here in 1609 that officially brought the first few settlers to the island. In some instances the Coat of Arms has a Latin phrase the reads “Quo Fata Ferunt” meaning “Whither the Fates Carry”.
