Public Transportation in Bermuda

Taking a cruise to Bermuda solves the problem of getting to the island, but once you get here you will need to transportation get around. Most ships arriving in Bermuda dock at The Royal Naval Dockyard (Dockyard), the area itself is very walkable and also has a free shuttle to take you to some of the main places, however, if you are looking to really explore the island you will have to make your way out of Dockyard. There are many ways to get around the island and this article should help you find the best option.

Public Transportation

The public transportation system in Bermuda consists of buses and ferries. From Dockyard the buses will take you to The City of Hamilton passing by the most popular beaches and other spots along the way while the ferries go directly to Hamilton or The Town of St. George’s. They both cost $5 per ride which has to be exact change or you can purchase a day pass if you plan on frequently using them while visiting. To get to the ferry terminal you will have to walk outside of the port security gates to the left, next to the Visitor Information Centre where you can purchase passes or tokens. The bus stop is outside of the Clocktower Mall a bit further away. You can get to either using the free shuttle that takes you around Dockyard. When getting on the bus, if you are unsure where you have to get off just let your driver know and they will make sure to stop when you get there. Some helpful advice when catching the bus, there are two pole colours at stops, pink poles are heading towards Hamilton while blue are heading away; if you are going back to the ship you will need to be on the side of the road with a blue bus stop. Mini Buses

These privately owned buses are ideal for larger groups, over 6 people, and are mainly used to take passengers to Horseshoe Bay Beach. To get there it will cost you $7 per person each way. When you get off the ship there will be plenty of them waiting to take you to the beach.

Taxi

This is the most expensive option, but provides the most personal experience as well as comfort. Taxis will be waiting for you when you disembark the ship and will be happy to take you where you have to go. The rates for the taxi are metered so the price may vary depending on where you go. To get to Horseshoe Bay it will cost $32 – $38 while a taking a taxi into Hamilton will cost $50-$60 depending on how many people you have. Rental Vehicles

While you can mot rent a car in Bermuda, you have the option to rent a scooter or electric mini car. These will give more freedom and allow you to visit all of the places you want to visit on your own time. Both hold two passengers which means they may not be ideal for families with many children.
